July's 2026 sailing trip! Day one Seward to Bulldog Cove.

 I guess it has been some time since I updated the blog.

Last sailing season was pretty much a bust. We had to take S/V Ulu out of the water and do some pretty extensive repairs.

This season though, Ulu sailed like a dream!

Sean and I researched and poured over our route (see document) and went into this season with a few thoughts we had learned from the previous sailing seasons.

1. Weather gets a big vote! If the weather doesn't make sense, sailing doesn't make sense.

2. We are willing to change our route, our plan, our stays based on all the knowledge we have at the time a decision needs to be made.

3. We motor when there is a time sensitive location (such as we need to get to point XYZ before a strong tide, etc.). 

We arrived in Seward on Friday, July 3rd. We had hoped to leave on Saturday, July 4th, but that didn't work out (ie... the weather wasn't good). We started our trip a day later on Sunday, July 5th.

You know what they say about rain though right? It brings the waterfalls.

Super happy with good gear! The trick I would say about sailing in Alaska is to not overdress. Sweat is not your friend here. A little cold is the way to go.

Bulldog Cove. We have enjoyed this anchorage many times.

I wonder what the weather will bring us tomorrow.

Of course we have to take Dingo to shore so he can do his business.

You can tell how rainy it was! Why do I have to always try to see around his giant ears?!?

One of the best parts of sailing, is the warm food for dinner!

I think Millie had butter noodles, but Sean made us beef Stroganoff and it was SO good!

Sailing notes: N Wind 10 knots, 2 ft seas.

Rain leaked from the helm to my side of the bed in the aft birth. My laptop was soaked!!!

We anchored at 40 feet or so and motored the entire way (18 nautical miles ish).

Millie wrote the following words in my log: Croissant, Patrick, Moist room.

Trail River Campground

Sean and I spotted Trail River Campground back in April on a trip down to Seward. I was excited to go back when the lake was not frozen. We reserved a tent site online and based on the online system, it looked like the campground was really full. When we arrived, there were lots of reserved signs, but on closer inspection, some of the reserved signs were for dates that had passed or in the future. There were many spots available. Anyway, we met the campground host and he informed us that he and his wife were bleaching ALL the bathrooms every day. These were the cleanest campground bathrooms I have ever seen. The cost for tent sites is $18 per day. There is a two week limit. Dogs are allowed and I found this to be a very dog friendly place. If I had to complain about anything it would be that it was kind of noisy. I wasn't sure at first if it was the river or if it was car traffic noise I was hearing. Day Care

Everyday that Autumn and I go to the gym, Autumn goes to day care. We love the daycare. Miss Thea and Miss Kim are so great to all the kids and the stuff that Autumn gets to do that she might not otherwise. For an hour 4 or 5 days a week, I just love it. Autumn's activity for today was play doh. This is a big favorite with Autumn. Please open this. Finally! Pounding the doh. Autumn made us something at daycare this week: It has to be my favorite thing that Autumn has made! Another view. Autumn and I are going to church tonight and I'm really excited. The first few chapters of our study guide that I have read have been so interesting, I cannot wait to discuss it this evening. It is so warm outside (31 degrees) that I'm half tempted to go for a walk with Autumn. My back is hurting though, maybe we will just walk around our neighborhood and play in the snow or something. Prince William Sound Day 4 ~ Mallard Bay Tide Pooling

 From the sailing log: "Variable winds 5 kts or less. Mostly cloudy. Seas around 2 ft. Raised anchor at 0940. Heading to Squire Island. Sailing unlikely. We motored out of Mallard Bay, but quickly realized there was enough wind to sail. After the sails were raised, I pinched the wind trying to avoid an island. I lost the wind, Ulu was stopped and I had no control. Sean turned the boat around, we regained control and then went back into the small passage area to Squire Island. Anchored in Squire Island Cove at 50 feet. I did a terrible job anchoring too. The wind was behind me and it just felt backwards."  We woke at 0630 and headed to shore for tide pooling. We had 3 or 4 seals very curious about what we were doing, but also, very shy. Although it is called Mallard Bay, this Harlequin Duck is the only duck I saw.
