Knik River and Eklutna Tailrace
Sean's cousin, Adam, invited Sean to participate in a kayak "race."
The plan was to meet a Jim Creek and run the Knik River down to Reflections Lake bridge.
Emelia and I played shuttle, Sean raced and Autumn went to a friends birthday/going away party.
We weren't really sure about the weather, but when we arrived at Jim Creek, it was beautiful.
This is pioneer ridge, which I have been itching, itching to hike. I am hoping to cross it off my wish list this summer.
There were 15 participants by my count.
Sean's touring boat.
The water didn't look like it was moving too swiftly.
Lots of families down there.
Finally, off they go. Adam is in the canoe, Sean in the kayak.
That guy to the right of Sean came in about the same time as Sean.
Hard to say which one of them finished first.
I was impressed by the stand up paddle boarders.
There was also a guy with a drone down there.
I'm not sure if there will be access to some of that footage.
After seeing the participants off, Emelia and I headed to Elutna Tailrace.
Adam's family met us there.
Although it was cloudy, it was still pretty out.
I like the clouds in the reflection of the water.
We were making our way to the old cars.
I knew they were down here somewhere.
Sean and I have seen them before.
You can see the rain off in the distance.
It is such an odd thing that there are so many abandoned cars down there.
Hard to say why they are there.
Some speculate that after an earthquake, there was a landslide, but I've not been able to confirm that.
Bog wintergreen.
While we were down there, someone mentioned that there had not been many flowers yet.
I beg to differ.
The tailrace.
It is SO blue!
I like looking through this car.
I've photographed it multiple times.
This was the vehicle we were looking for though.
Obligatory jumping picture.
Emelia got tore up by mosquitoes.
Did you know that since I've gone through chemo, the mosquitoes really don't bother me.
I promised Emelia the night before I would get all my steps in before we left for Sean's stuff today so that we didn't have to walk too far and could even stay in the car if we wanted.
It was nice to just walk around and enjoy and not trying to meet some goal.
We made our way to the take out.
The boat launch at Reflections Lake.
I could see that Sean and someone else were neck and neck, but I had no idea who had really "won".
I'm not sure that Sean knows either! HA HA
We stuck around for a little bit, mostly long enough for Sean to load up his gear, but we needed to get back to town so we could pick up Autumn.
Autumn said she had a nice time at Hailey's birthday/going away party.
I do think Autumn will miss Hailey.
Hailey's parents decided they had had enough of Alaska after 18 years here.
They are moving to Pennsylvania.
Well, that's our day in a nutshell.
Planning on a hike tomorrow.
The Jordan's.
