ATL.
I cannot believe I have to go to Atlanta twice this week......
We left shortly after I got off the phone with you and made our way right for
The Historic Fourth Ward Park and Spraygrounds.
We've been there once before and the girls liked it.
I walked in circles around the park until I hit two miles.
It was hot.
I wanted to get in the water too.
After eating lunch (we packed it) and playing, we headed over to Emory.
Millie and Autumn making a new friend at the eye doctor's office.
When we pulled in to Emory, there was a fire truck near the parking garage. It was gumming up traffic pretty bad.
I was wondering what was happening.
We finally get parked and head over to where the eye center is.
We make it to the elevator bank that we need to get to our doctor and lo and behold, there are about 15 firemen standing at the elevators and there is an elevator stuck between floors.
I say out loud, "Maybe we should take the stairs."
Fireman says, "No, it should be OK. We just need to work on this one."
We get on the elevator, push the 5th floor. The elevator goes to the 3rd floor. Then the 6th floor. We pick up some firefighters. It goes down to the 2nd floor.
I inform the fireman we are on the elevator from hell.
"That is why we are here mam."
Autumn: I want to take the stairs.
OK, we will get off on the next stop.
It takes us back to the third floor.
Finally, we make it to the fifth.
We stand in a line (very unusual) and the office looks to be very busy.
We get called to the counter and she says,
"We don't have you scheduled for an appointment today."
Excuse me?
"You aren't on the computer."
I told her that I did not care what her computer said. We scheduled this appointment back in March. I drove TWO hours one way and I was not leaving until we were seen by Dr Hutchinson.
They put us in, but inform me that it will take longer than normal since we did not have an appointment.
WE HAD AN APPOINTMENT!! I have proof!!!!!!!!!!
We finally get called back.
They took their measurements.
All the same tests they have done before.
You know that 3D test?
Millie pinched the wings of the bugs again and correctly picked 2 out of the 3 animals that were "sticking" out on the chart.
That is a huge improvement over the last time we were there.
This is what Dr Hutchinson had to say.
At distance, Millie has ZERO crossing of the eye. Sometimes it looks like Millie's eye is tracking out, but when she covers one eye and removes the cover, Millie's eye stays completely steady. If there was any crossing at all, when they removed the cover, you would see a shift in her eye. I observed this particular test a bunch of times today. Her eye does not move at all.
At distance, without glasses, Millie closes her right eye to try and make out things and focus. Dr Hutchinson said that is one reason that Millie HAS to wear her glasses. Her right eye turns in at distance when she is straining to focus. She closes the right eye (it looks like she is winking and I have watched her do that many times when not wearing her glasses) because it turns in and uses her strong eye to try and see. This WILL cause Amblyopia.
At near, whether wearing her glasses or not, Millie's eyes cross (in). It was a very small amount. In measurement terms, it was 18 prisms (as opposed to the much higher numbers she was getting before). 0-10 is within normal range.
This is the second reason Millie must wear her glasses. Without her glasses, her eyes will cross more frequently and could result in needing another surgery.
Millie conceded today that she did need her glasses to see.
It was as if a light bulb went off.
She took the eye test with her glasses on and then told the doctor she did not need her glasses.
Dr Hutchinson listened to Millie and told her, "Take them off and let's do the eye test without them."
Millie saw for herself that she couldn't correctly name as many letters on the eye chart as she did with her glasses on.
I am hoping this is the breakthrough we need with Millie so that she will wear her glasses.
For now the Doc wants to keep the prescription the same.
She wants to see us back in 6 months (so December).
I asked her about Millie starting school and my concerns about her being able to see.
She said that if Millie was going to have problems, it would be when school starts.
There will be a good bit of the day that will require Millie to look at and focus on things at near (like reading, doing worksheets, etc).
Doc says that if Millie is struggling to see in school, we need to call back and come in before December.
Once we got done with the eye doctor, we went over and visited Brett and Alice.
Brett looks really good, but he is in a lot of pain.
The girls thought it was pretty cool that he had a tube coming out of his head (draining the blood, swelling from surgery).
We stayed for a little bit and then headed out.
We got on the road about 4 pm.
Traffic was intense, and it started to rain.
We drove straight from Atlanta to church.
The girls had choir practice, I had choir practice.
We just got home about an hour ago.
Everyone is in bed except for me.
I'm headed that way shortly.
I wanted to write you first.
I'm exhausted.
I sleep so terrible last night.
We are out of milk.
I need to put gas in the car.
I guess that is what I will be taking care of tomorrow.
I love you.
Your current wife and favorite airman. xoxo
